The Use of Chinese Characters in Written Korean

According to Steven S. Bammel of Korean Consulting & Translation Service Inc., there are three main reasons why Hanja are used in modern Written Korean. They are as follows:

1.) The Chinese characters have a deep meaning and even unknown words can be understood if someone knows the Chinese characters in which they are written.
2.) The Chinese characters are used in Korean for rendering names.
3.) The Chinese characters can be used to differentiate between two homonyms which are spelled and pronounced the same in Korean but have different meanings.
