- This character combines "paddy field" 田 and "earth" 土 to mean "a small village". A certain small village has lots of paddy field 田 on its land 土.
- 이 is used if found at the beginning of the word, and 리 otherwise.
- This character 里[리] was also used as a unit of measurement for distance. See below.
